2019 Association for Political Theory Conference

APT-CPT Collaboration
Call for Self-Nominations

Apply by October 8, 2019

We are seeking self-nominations from authors interested in participating in this year’s APT-CPT Mentoring Collaboration.

What is the APT-CPT Collaboration?

This program provides mentoring for scholars in professional situations where this might be particularly advantageous, such as graduate students, unemployed scholars, non-tenure track faculty, junior faculty, faculty who have few or no campus colleagues in political theory, or scholars working on topics that require special mentoring. It aims to identify and develop three promising papers presented at the annual APT conference for submission to the journal Contemporary Political Theory. Authors of the three selected papers will receive (1) mentorship from a member of the CPT editorial team and (2) a guarantee of external review at CPT. This collaboration reflects the intellectual vibrancy of both partners and advances the APT’s commitments to equality, diversity, mentoring, and professional development.

Who is eligible to participate?

Only authors presenting papers at the 2019 APT annual meeting are eligible to participate in this program. Eligible papers must be original, complete, unpublished, and not under consideration or review in any other venue. Selected authors commit to the full review, revision and submission process.

How do I self-nominate?

If you are interested in having your APT paper considered for this project, please fill out this Google Form by October 8, 2019. Only authors who self-nominate will be considered. By opting into this program, authors agree (if selected) to submit their revised manuscripts to CPT by January 31, 2020.

How are papers selected?

Self-nominated papers will undergo a double-blind review by members of the SCMPD. If necessary, chairs and discussants may be consulted to aid in the selection process. Selected papers will be (a) well-written and original, and (b) show real promise but require further development. The point is not to identify papers that merely “need more work” in the sense of further research, polishing, etc., but rather to identify papers that would benefit from mentoring.

What happens next?

Selected authors will have the opportunity to revise their manuscripts in light of feedback from their discussants and audiences at the APT annual meeting. They will submit their revised manuscripts to CPT by January 31, 2020. CPT will assign an editor to mentor each manuscript. CPT guarantees that every manuscript submitted through this program will be sent to external reviewers.

What does CPT publish?

CPT publishes original scholarship that speaks broadly to debates in the field of political theory today. Such works may draw from any period of western or non-western political thought and may address a wide range of “objects” including performances, exhibitions, literary texts and canonical works of political thought; events such as elections, protests, wars and more; transformations in the discourse of political theory broadly construed (e.g. the Anthropocene, materialism, neo-republicanism, the constructivist turn, value theory, populism, etc.). CPT is an interdisciplinary journal committed to approaching political theory from every conceivable angle and rejects the idea that the study of politics belongs only to the formal discipline of political science. The CPT editorial team prides itself on giving close attention to the editorial process and to prospective authors; it is committed to a rigorous double-blind review process that treats both authors and reviewers with scholarly respect.
